Project Description: Development of Brackish Water Integrated Fish Farms
In 2009, the Aqua-Green Integrated Farming Support Initiative (AGI), in partnership with the Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency (RSSDA), embarked on a transformative project to enhance aquaculture production in Degema and Ikuru towns. This ambitious project aimed to establish two state-of-the-art brackish water integrated fish farms while equipping local farmers with the skills and resources needed to thrive in the aquaculture industry.
The project focused on utilizing the abundant brackish water resources in the area, which are ideal for cultivating species like tilapia and catfish. AGI implemented innovative technologies, including collapsible tarpaulin fish tanks and water recirculatory aquaculture systems (WRAS), to optimize fish growth and minimize environmental impact. These systems allowed farmers to maintain water quality, conserve resources, and increase production efficiency.
AGI provided comprehensive training programs tailored to the needs of the local farmers. The training covered topics such as fish breeding, feed formulation, disease management, and post-harvest handling. Over 200 participants were equipped with the technical expertise to manage fish farms, ensuring the sustainability and profitability of their ventures.
The project also emphasized market linkage and post-harvest support. AGI facilitated connections between farmers and buyers, ensuring a stable demand for their produce. Farmers were introduced to modern fish processing techniques, such as smoking and packaging, which enabled them to add value to their products and tap into higher-value markets, including export opportunities.
Through this initiative, AGI not only enhanced the livelihoods of local farmers but also contributed to the economic development of the region. By creating employment opportunities and promoting sustainable aquaculture practices, the project left a lasting impact on the communities of Degema and Ikuru towns. AGI’s commitment to innovation and community empowerment made this project a resounding success.
