Since 2017, Aqua-Green Integrated Farming Support Initiative (AGI) has been a pivotal partner in the CBN Anchor Borrower Program, providing off-taker services to farmers across the Niger Delta. The program was designed to bridge the gap between agricultural production and market demand by offering a guaranteed market for farmers’ produce, thereby boosting their confidence and encouraging large-scale farming.
- AGI’s role in this initiative was multi-faceted. As an off-taker, the organization coordinated the collection and purchase of fish and poultry products directly from farmers, ensuring that their produce was sold at fair prices. This removed the uncertainty of market fluctuations, enabling farmers to focus on production without the fear of unsold goods.
- To prepare farmers for the program, AGI conducted comprehensive training sessions on best practices in aquaculture and poultry farming. These sessions covered feed formulation, disease management, and quality control, ensuring that farmers produced high-quality products that met market standards. Additionally, AGI introduced modern farming technologies, such as biofloc systems and water recirculatory aquaculture systems (WRAS), to enhance productivity.
- Logistical support was another critical component of AGI’s strategy. The organization established an efficient supply chain that included transportation, cold storage facilities, and market linkages. This system minimized post-harvest losses and ensured timely delivery of fresh, high-quality products to buyers.
- AGI also facilitated access to financial resources for farmers through partnerships with microfinance institutions and cooperatives. These funds enabled farmers to scale their operations and invest in better equipment and resources.
- Over the years, the program has had a transformative impact on the agricultural landscape of the Niger Delta. Thousands of farmers have benefited from increased incomes, improved production techniques, and guaranteed market access.
