Case Study
In 2019, Aqua-Green Integrated Farming Support Initiative (AGI), in partnership with the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), launched a targeted program to empower women in Ogoni communities affected by hydrocarbon pollution. This initiative sought to restore livelihoods through sustainable agribusiness practices while promoting environmental recovery in polluted areas.
The program was specifically tailored to the needs of Ogoni women, many of whom faced economic and environmental challenges due to decades of oil spills. AGI designed and delivered comprehensive training sessions focused on aquaculture, snail farming, poultry management, and crop farming. These sessions emphasized sustainable and eco-friendly practices that could thrive in the unique conditions of environmentally degraded lands.
Participants were provided with startup packs, including fingerlings, feed, chicks, snail farming kits, and tools to initiate farming activities. These resources enabled immediate application of the training and helped the women start generating income. AGI also introduced low-cost, scalable solutions such as collapsible tarpaulin ponds and mobile farming systems, ensuring accessibility for women with limited resources.

Solutions
To maximize impact, AGI facilitated mentorship programs and follow-up support, helping participants navigate challenges and achieve long-term success. The initiative also included market access training, where participants learned about packaging, branding, and selling their products to local and regional markets.
By the end of the project, hundreds of Ogoni women had successfully launched agribusiness ventures, leading to significant improvements in their household incomes and community wellbeing. The program not only empowered women economically but also contributed to environmental recovery by promoting sustainable farming methods that align with HYPREP’s goals.
