Between 2009 and 2012, Aqua-Green Integrated Farming Support Initiative (AGI) partnered with the Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency (RSSDA) to develop two brackish water integrated fish farms in Degema and Ikuru towns, Rivers State, Nigeria. This project was initiated to address the untapped potential of brackish water resources while empowering local farmers with sustainable fish farming techniques.
AGI designed and constructed modern aquaculture systems tailored to brackish water environments, integrating Water Recirculatory Aquaculture Systems (WRAS) and collapsible tarpaulin ponds. These innovations optimized water usage, maintained high water quality, and increased fish yields while minimizing the environmental impact of farming activities.
Over 200 participants were trained through comprehensive workshops on fish breeding, feed formulation, water quality management, and disease prevention. Participants gained hands-on experience in managing fish farms sustainably, ensuring high survival rates and consistent production. AGI’s training also included sessions on post-harvest handling, such as fish smoking, packaging, and preservation techniques, allowing farmers to add value to their products and reduce waste.
- To ensure profitability, AGI facilitated market linkages, connecting farmers to local and regional buyers. By introducing value-added practices and improving access to markets, the initiative significantly enhanced the livelihoods of farmers and contributed to local food security.
This project successfully harnessed the region’s natural resources, created jobs, and improved the economic wellbeing of rural communities. AGI’s holistic approach—combining infrastructure development, technical training, and market support—has made the Development of Brackish Water Integrated Fish Farms a model for sustainable aquaculture development in Nigeria.

AGI provided a comprehensive solution that included infrastructure development, capacity building, and post-harvest support. Farmers were trained in modern fish farming techniques, including water quality management, fish breeding, feed formulation, and disease prevention. Advanced technologies such as collapsible tarpaulin ponds and water recirculatory aquaculture systems (WRAS) were introduced to optimize fish growth and reduce environmental impact.
The project trained over 200 participants, equipping them with the skills to manage fish farms sustainably.
