Project Description: Women in Agriculture Empowerment Project
Launched in 2019, the Women in Agriculture Empowerment Project by Aqua-Green Integrated Farming Support Initiative (AGI) aims to address the challenges faced by women in Nigeria’s agricultural sector. Recognizing the pivotal role women play in food production and rural development, the project focuses on equipping them with the skills, resources, and opportunities to thrive in aquaculture, livestock, and crop farming.
- The program offers comprehensive training tailored to the specific needs of women, many of whom have limited access to resources and formal education. AGI conducts workshops and hands-on training sessions on fish farming, poultry management, snail farming, and crop production. These sessions cover essential topics such as breeding techniques, feed formulation, disease control, and sustainable farming practices.
- To ensure the accessibility of the project, AGI designed simplified farming tools and systems that can be easily adopted by women farmers. Portable tarpaulin ponds, starter kits for poultry and snail farming, and user-friendly guides are provided to participants. These resources enable women to start their farming ventures with minimal investment and operational complexity.
- AGI also prioritizes market access for women farmers. The organization facilitates connections with buyers, cooperatives, and aggregators, ensuring that their produce reaches local and regional markets. Additionally, AGI provides mentorship on packaging, branding, and financial literacy, helping participants add value to their products and increase profitability.
- The program also includes startup packs, which typically contain items like fingerlings, feed, and mobile fish ponds for aquaculture or chicks and basic equipment for poultry farming. Over 700 women have received these packs, allowing them to begin generating income immediately after training.
- Beyond economic empowerment, the project fosters a sense of community among participants. AGI organizes support networks and cooperatives where women can share experiences, pool resources, and collectively overcome challenges.
- The Women in Agriculture Empowerment Project has transformed the lives of hundreds of women, enabling them to become financially independent and contributing to food security in their communities. By breaking barriers and fostering inclusivity, AGI is ensuring that women are not just participants but leaders in Nigeria’s agricultural transformation.
