Case Study
Launched in 2019, Aqua-Green Integrated Farming Support Initiative (AGI), in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Development, implemented the Women in Agriculture Empowerment Project. This initiative aimed to address gender disparities in agriculture by equipping women with the skills, tools, and resources needed to build sustainable livelihoods in farming.
The project specifically targeted women in rural communities, many of whom had limited access to farming resources and training. AGI provided comprehensive training on various farming systems, including aquaculture (fish farming), snail farming, poultry management, and crop production. The training was tailored to the needs of women, focusing on low-cost, scalable farming solutions that could be adopted with minimal capital.
Participants were provided with startup kits, which included fingerlings, chicks, snail breeding sets, feed, and farming tools. These resources enabled the women to begin farming immediately after completing their training. AGI also emphasized sustainable practices, introducing eco-friendly systems like collapsible tarpaulin ponds and disease-resistant livestock breeds to maximize productivity.

Solutions
To enhance profitability, AGI facilitated market linkages by connecting participants with buyers, cooperatives, and aggregators. Participants were trained in packaging and branding, allowing them to position their products competitively in the market. AGI also provided mentorship and technical support, ensuring participants could navigate challenges effectively and sustain their ventures.
By the end of the project’s first phase, over 700 women had successfully established small-scale farms, significantly improving their incomes and contributing to food security in their communities. The program also fostered a sense of community, with women forming cooperatives to share resources, knowledge, and support.
Key Features:
- Comprehensive Training: Workshops tailored to women’s needs, covering aquaculture, snail farming, and poultry management.
- Startup Kits: Distribution of fingerlings, chicks, feed, and farming tools to kickstart operations.
- Sustainable Practices: Introduction to eco-friendly farming systems and low-cost solutions.
- Market Linkages: Connections with buyers, cooperatives, and aggregators for better profitability.
- Mentorship and Support: Ongoing guidance to ensure long-term success and community impact.
The Women in Agriculture Empowerment Project is a testament to AGI’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and empowering marginalized groups. This initiative has become a model for using agriculture as a tool for gender equity and economic transformation.
